On September 15, Plácido Domingo performs at the inauguration of Tirana’s National Theater of Opera and Ballet, joined by world star soprano Ermonela Jaho as well as other prominent Albanese artists.
“I am honored to sing at the Grand Gala Ceremony for the inauguration of the Tirana National Theater” said Domingo about the celebrated occasion. “After 5 years this Opera House will finally come to life and will return to host concerts, opera and ballet performances. “I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere of this city and the friendliness of the people who welcomed me” said Domingo, reminiscing about his first performance in Belgrade almost 50 years ago.
“I will be joined by Italian soprano Anna Pirozzi, a wonderful voice, one of the greatest interpreters of the international scene today. We will be accompanied by the RTS Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Dian Tchobanov, and I will have the pleasure of singing with a young star born right here, soprano Marija Jelic,” he added.
ACPE, the Spanish Association of Foreign Press Correspondents, announced that Maestro Plácido Domingo will be honored with the ACPE Culture Award “for his immense professional career” applauding him as a multifaceted artist, promoter of young talents and a World Ambassador for Spanish Culture and Zarzuela.
Receiving this Award is “a great honor for me and without a doubt an unexpected joy” said Plácido Domingo, congratulating his fellow 2020 ACPE Award recipients: Susana Griso, Pau Gasol and the Historic and Unique Parks of Madrid. In the previous edition, ACPE recognized Vicente Vallés, Rafa Nadal, Antonio Zapatero, Ifema, the Thyssen Museum and the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain.
Domingo, who will not be able to attend the Award Ceremony on September 8 in Madrid, as he will be performing in Belgrade on that date, highlighted the value of ACPE’s work “which for almost a century has elevated our country in the world through the protection of freedom of expression, respect and the rejection of all forms of discrimination and prejudice."

Operatic super star Plácido Domingo has been invited to perform in Motril, Spain to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the Calderón Theatre in March 2022.
For Domingo, this invitation is a double honor as it allows him “to celebrate the anniversary of one of the oldest theatres, certainly another jewel of Spain.” It also reminds him of his mother, the celebrated Zarzuela Singer Pepita Embil “who worked in this Theatre, and who travelled around the world performing ‘La Caramba’, one of Maestro Moreno Torroba’s most famous Zarzuelas, set precisely in Motril.”
For Luisa García Chamorro, Mayor of Motril, Plácido Domingo’s presentation will situate the Calderón Theatre among the most important musical venues in the world, adding that “it will be internationalized thanks to the performance of such an opera titan.”
